Michigan Panthers Mid-Season Report

Updated: Sep 25, 2019

We are already halfway through the 2019 regular season, as the Michigan Panthers have played four games at each level (freshmen, junior varsity and varsity).

Let's check in on how each team is doing at the midway point:

After a 2-0 start, the freshmen team finds itself on a two-game skid, and currently has a 2-2 record overall. Short on numbers, but big on heart, the baby blues started out strong with wins against the Washtenaw Blue and Dearborn Thunderbirds. The youngest Panthers team then lost a tough matchup with the Canton Lions in Week 3, and fell to the Westland Comets in Week 4. The freshmen team owns an impressive +16 point-differential at this point in the season.

Season results:

Week 1 - Michigan Panthers 47, Washtenaw Blue 0

Week 2 - Michigan Panthers 26, Dearborn Thunderbirds 6

Week 3 - Canton Lions 38, Michigan Panthers 0

Week 4 - Westland Comets 26, Michigan Panthers 13

Points for: 86 Points Against: 70

The freshmen squad looks to get back on track with a 4 p.m. kickoff against the Westland Meteors on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Junior Varsity:

The junior varsity Panthers are also 2-2, but have gotten to this point on a slightly different trajectory than the freshmen. The JV team opened up the season with a win against Washtenaw, but then surprisingly dropped the second game of the season away at Dearborn. Following the loss to the Thunderbirds, the Panthers were not able to contain the Canton Lions, despite a great effort. The JV boys then showed great resiliency in a bounce back victory against the Comets, winning by 39 points. On the season as a whole, the JV team has scored 19 more points than its opponents.

JV will have its first ever night-time game (6 p.m.) on Saturday, Sept. 28 against the Meteors.

Season results:

Week 1 - Michigan Panthers 33, Washtenaw Blue 12

Week 2 - Dearborn Thunderbirds 13, Michigan Panthers 0

Week 3 - Canton Lions 34, Michigan Panthers 6

Week 4 - Michigan Panthers 39, Westland Comets 0 Points for: 78 Points Against: 59

Similar to the two younger teams, the varsity squad finds itself at 2-2. That's right, all three levels currently have the same record. Just like freshmen, the eldest Panthers started out the season on fire with a 2-0 record, while outscoring their foes 50-6. However, the last two games have not gone the way the team expected. A Canton Lions teams that is a surefire playoff contender gave the varsity Panthers their first loss of the season. There may have been a bit of a hangover from that game, as the following week the Panthers were stunningly shut out by the Comets. The varsity team has yielded more points against than it has scored so far this season, but expect that to change.

Varsity looks to bounce back with a huge under-the-lights matchup against the Meteors this coming weekend. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m.

Season Results:

Week 1 - Michigan Panthers 24, Washtenaw Blue 0

Week 2 - Michigan Panthers 26, Dearborn Thunderbirds 6

Week 3 - Canton Lions 47, Michigan Panthers 6

Week 4 - Westland Comets 20, Michigan Panthers 0 Points for: 56 Points Against: 73

With four games left in the season, each team is still right in the thick of the playoff race. But another loss at this point could seriously jeopardize those chances at every level. The Panthers look to get back on track and sweep the Westland Meteors at Wayne Memorial High School on Saturday night.

Here is a look at the remaining schedule for the rest of the season:
